Chocolate Brownies

2ounceunsweetened chocolate (i.e. two squares of baker's chocolate)
1⁄2cupbutter or margarine
3⁄4cupall-purpose flour
1⁄2teaspoonbaking powder
2 eggs
1teaspoonvanilla extract
1cupcoarsely chopped walnuts (or pecans)


Heat oven to 350° F. Lightly grease an 8 x 8 x 2-inch pan.

Melt chocolate with butter over hot, not boiling, water. Cool.

Sift flour with baking powder and salt; set aside.

In a large bowl, with wooden spoon, or portable electric mixer at medium speed, beat sugar and eggs until light.

Beat in chocolate mixture and vanilla.

Stir in flour mixture and nuts until well combined.

Spread evenly in prepared pan. Bake 25 to 30 minutes, or just until surface is firm to the touch.

Cool 10 minutes. With sharp knife, cut into 16 squares.
